Federal Pro Se Assistance Programs

The Federal Pro Se Assistance Program (PSAP) is a collaboration between SUNY Buffalo Law School, JustCause and the U.S. District Court, Western District of New York.

Volunteer attorneys will provide FREE limited scope legal assistance on civil federal matters to individuals in Rochester who cannot afford an attorney.

The Pro Se Assistance Program will not pay court costs associated with filing or defending lawsuits in Federal Court.

What kind of issues can the Pro Se Assistance Program help me with?

The volunteer attorneys can provide:

  • information about federal court procedures and the law as it applies to facts you provide 
  • advice about preparing pleadings, motions, or other court documents
  • advice about discovery and motion practice
  • referrals to other services, if appropriate

The volunteer attorneys will NOT:

  • appear in court on your behalf 
  • research, write or file court documents for you conduct any investigation into the facts of your case 
  • negotiate with your opponent or your opponent’s attorney

Please Note: 

The Pro Se Assistance Program is not staffed or coordinated by the U.S District Court of Western New York. It is staffed by the SUNY Buffalo School of Law and JustCause. 

The Pro Se Assistance Program is entirely separate from any appointment of counsel by the Federal Court.
